SIX

SELENA

Dr. Knight finishes his examination and flashes a bright smile. Or, at least, what I assume is as bright of a smile as the mountain men around here seem to be capable of giving.

“It’s all good news,” he says. “Your scans are good. The bruises are mostly gone. And you’re remembering things.”

“I am,” I nod excitedly.

It’s crazy how it happened. I mean, I guess I’m not an expert in head injuries or memory loss. But when I thought about what it would be like to regain my memories, I assumed it would be more like a little trickle of water, like the drip of a leaky faucet.

Instead, for me at least, it was like drinking out of a firehose.

One minute, I was arguing with Aaron about why he wouldn’t kiss me. The next, I was remembering everything. Well, almost everything. I remember my childhood. I remember moving to New York City and getting my first modeling job. I remember meeting my ex and the fall-out from his cheating on me. I remember the moose in the road.

But everything between the moose and waking up in the hospital bed is gone. I wouldn’t mind having lost the memory of the cheating ex-boyfriend, too, but overall, I have no complaints.

No complaints beyond the fact that Aaron hasn’t said a word to me in over an hour.

I finally find him standing outside the exam room. He’s watching the sunrise out the window.

I follow his gaze and join him in admiring one of nature’s wonders.

“It really is something,” he says, his voice rich and warm. “Isn’t it?”

No longer looking at the sunrise, which—as he said—really is something, but focused completely on him, I agree.

“Yeah.” My throat is too clogged by emotions, my heart pounding too loudly in my ears, to say anything more.

Whoever Aaron was to me before the accident. Whoever he is to everyone else: a firefighter. A mountain wilderness guide. I burly and rugged hunk of a man. I know who he is to me now.

He’s my protector.

He’s my peace.

He’s the kind of man a woman would be crazy not to love.

“Aaron,” I manage to say at last.

He turns toward me, his green eyes glowing in the morning light. “Yeah, Selena?”

Resting a hand on his cheek, I close the distance between us and press my lips against his.

This time, he doesn’t pull away.

It’s a mad dash to get back to his cabin. Though I’m halfway tempted to tell him to pull over to the side of the road, because I want him so badly, I don’t.

Some things are worth the wait of a bed. Or at least a couch that I happen to know for a fact can comfortably fit two.

In the end, we don’t make it to the bed. We leave a trail of clothing between the door and the sofa. Between kisses and our strip show duet, he tells me how badly he wants me. How he’s wanted to kiss me ever since I corrected a construction worker in a funny—yet decisive—way when he cat-called me on the streets of New York.
